Dentro de la enorme escena underground que transita en las sombras, allá, lejos de los reflectores, a veces injustamente valorada y celosamente guardada para cierto grupo se encuentran verdaderas joyas desarrollando música bastante interesante. Una vez más echaremos un vistazo dentro de este basto e interesante mundo, y hoy toca turno a un talento emergente más que abandera a la escena underground de la cultura Hip-Hop. Desde Vancouver , Canadá, en charla exclusiva para COC4INE: Nicholas Cheung.
Recientemente festejando su cumpleaños 22, Nicholas está decidido a tomar el camino de la música. En una pasión que desarrolló desde temprana edad, vio su encuentro con el destino cuando a los apenas 6 años comenzó a asistir a clases de piano clásico, para descubrir en ese momento lo que le tocaba para esta vida.
"Asistí a clases de piano a los seis años, y para cuando tenía once descubrí que tenía la capacidad de improvisar, componer y hacer covers. Pero no fue sino hasta los 16 que comencé a hacer beats"
¿Pero, qué hay de esa transición en la cuál un músico busca y encuntra su género para finalmente desenvolverse ahí? Nicholas trasladó su pasión por la música gracias a la intervención (cuándo no) de uno de sus amigos.
" Cuando mi amigo me mostró a Eminem por primera vez mientras cursaba el tercer grado me convertí en un amante del Hip-Hop y su estilo distintivo. Aunque no me metí en la búsqueda de mi propio estilo musical hasta los trece. Yo sabía que tenía una pasión por la música, tanto hacerla como escucharla".
En esta búsqueda, en la cual resalta que debe ser mucho más allá que lo que presenta la radio, encontró su principal inspiración en artistas Hip-Hop como Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Nujabes, Jedi Mind Tricks, Three 6 Mafia, The Pharcyde, CunninLynguists, Immortal Technique, A $ AP Rocky, Joey Bada $ $, Madlib, MF DOOM , DJ Premier, Jefe Keef, Waka Flocka Flame y Riff Raff. y dentro del non- Hip- Hop Joe Hisaishi, Sigur Ros, Mew, Eskmo, Snarky Puppy, Ebrahim, entre otros. Una interesante mezcla que indudablemente le ayudó a construir un estilo propio.
En sus comienzos, Nicholas hizo covers en piano de artistas como Nujabes y poco a poco construyó una línea musical y un estilo, que no quisiera definir como un género específico, por lo que en la charla nos dijo al respecto:
"Hago música hip-hop. Sé que hay muchos sub-géneros, y mucha gente consideraría que algunas de mis canciones entran en la categoría de jazz-hop. Sin embargo, no sólo me quedo con sacar provecho de este género. Me gusta utilizar una gran cantidad de sonidos orgánicos y combinarlos con melodías memorables, por lo que son menos repetitivas que la canción convencional de hip-hop y se pueden escuchar como un producto independiente. Deseo que mis creaciones no sólo sean golpes, sino que también sean canciones".
Una de las piezas más interesantes y particularmente con la que descubrimos a Nicholas fue precisamente "Dat Jazz", pista en la cual podemos encontrar esos trazos de jazz-hop del cual nos habla.
Entre los tracks que Nicholas a puesto al alcance en Youtube están la mecionada Saturday, Dat Jazz, Lucille,( la cual tiene toque de blues) y Glorious & Free, (esta última la más reciente). Y como la cosa va en serio, Nicholas compartió con nosotros lo que será su EP debut, el cual lo tiene realmente entusiasmado. Se titula "I AM" y está programado para finales de este mes. Contará con 7 canciones; las cuatro ya mencionadas que pueden encontrar en Youtube y tres más. Se dará a conocer a través de "Bob42jh" y el sello de Thomas Pride "Cult Classic Records". Por supuesto estaremos al pendiente y compartiremos el link de descarga pues estará disponible en FREE DOWNLOAD.
También preguntamos cómo percibe la escena Hip-Hop en las calles de Vancouver y el contraste con otros géneros:
" El Hip hop en su conjunto no es muy popular en la cultura dominante de Vancouver, la mayoría de la gente prefiere escuchar a las bandas de indie o pop. Sin embargo, en los últimos años, hay muchos actos undergrounds que salen de Vancouver. Muchos clubs, tiendas de ropa y eventos Hip-Hop se pueden observar, en los cuales venden artículos relacionados. Yo no creo que haya artistas de hip-hop de Vancouver que lo hayan hecho a lo grande a la escala de Drake y Justin Bieber (ambos de Ontario), pero tipos como Snak The Ripper han ganado una buena cantidad de seguidores a nivel internacional en la comunidad hip-hop underground. Muchos raperos y los actos de hip-hop de EE.UU. con frecuencia se presentan en Vancouver, por lo que no sería raro ver a la escena hip hop levantarse aquí".
El tema es interesante y hay mucha tela de dónde cortar, talentos emergentes y con las hagallas para labrar su propio camino y estilo (siempre y cuando tenga calidad) serán reconocidos por la comunidad COC4INE. Así que Nicholas debe ser agregado a nuestra lista de promesas a los cuales debemos seguir con lupa. A continuación los sitios oficiales y el demo del EP que será lanzado a finales de Julio.

Within the massive underground scene that moves in the shadows, there, away from the limelight, sometimes unfairly valued and jealously guarded for a certain group, developed gems found quite interesting music. Again we will look into this vast and interesting world, and today we turn to other emerging talent that is leading to the underground scene of Hip-Hop. From Vancouver, Canada, exclusively for COC4INE: Nicholas Cheung.
Recently celebrating his 22nd birthday, Nicholas is determined to take the path of music. In a passion that developed from an early age, he saw his encounter with destiny when the barely six years started attending classical piano lessons, at that time knew what it was up to this life.
"I started taking classical piano lessons when I was 6 years old, and by the time I was 11, I discovered that I had the ability to compose, improvise, and cover songs. I started making beats when I was 16 - 17"
But what about that transition, what your gender is finally unfold there? Nicholas moved his passion for music thanks to the intervention (when not) of one of his friends.
"Ever since my friend first showed me Eminem when I was in grade 3, I became a lover of hip-hop and its distinct style. Although I didn't really get into searching for my own music until I was 13, I knew I had a passion for music, both to make it and to listen to it".
In this search, which stands to be far beyond what has radio, found his main inspiration in Hip-Hop artists such as Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Nujabes, Jedi Mind Tricks, Three 6 Mafia, The Pharcyde, CunninLynguists, Immortal Technique, A $ AP Rocky, Joey Bada $ $, Madlib, MF DOOM, DJ Premier, Chief Keef, Waka Flocka Flame and Riff Raff. And within non-Hip-Hop Joe Hisaishi, Sigur Ros, Mew, Eskmo, Snarky Puppy, Ebrahim and more. An interesting mix that undoubtedly helped him to build his own style.
In the beginning, Nicholas made piano covers of artists like Nujabes and gradually built a musical style, which is not precisely defined by gender, so the talk we said about it:
"I make hip-hop music. I know there are many sub-genres, and many people would consider some of my songs would fall under the category of jazz-hop. However, I don't only stick with and capitalize on this genre. I like to use a lot of organic sounds and combine them with memorable melodies, so that they are less repetitive than the conventional hip-hop song and can be listened to as a standalone product. I wish for my creations to not only be beats, but also songs".
One of the most interesting pieces, particularly, with which Nicholas was discovered for us is "Dat Jazz", track in which we can find traces of jazz-hop.
Among the tracks that Nicholas put the scope on Youtube are Saturday, Dat Jazz, Lucille, (which has a touch of blues) and Glorious & Free, (the latter the most recent). And the thing is serious, Nicholas shared with us what will be their debut EP, which is what really excited. It's called "I AM" and is scheduled for later this month. It will have seven songs, the four already mentioned that you can find on Youtube and three more. It will be released through "Bob42jh" and seal of Thomas Pride "Cult Classic Records". Of course we will be watching and share the download link will be available for FREE DOWNLOAD.
We also asked how they perceive the Hip-Hop scene on the streets of Vancouver and contrast with other genres:
"Hip hop as a whole is not very popular in mainstream Vancouver culture...most people prefer to listen to indie or pop bands. However, in the recent few years, there are many underground acts coming out of Vancouver. Many clubs, clothing and record stores hold hip-hop affiliate events and sell hip-hop related items. I don't think there are any Vancouver hip-hop artists that have made it big on the scale of Drake and Justin Bieber (both from Ontario), but guys like Snak the Ripper and Swollen Members have garnered quite a bit of fans internationally in the underground hip-hop community. Many rappers and hip-hop acts from the US frequently tour in Vancouver, so it is not uncommon to see a rising hip hop scene up here".
The topic is interesting and there is plenty to where to cut, emerging talents with "hagallas" to till their own way and style (provided you have quality) will be recognized by the COC4INE community. So Nicholas should be added to our list of promises to which we follow closely. Then the official sites and debut EP which will be released in late July.
